Top 5 Common Mistakes Student Agents Make in Visa Applications
14 November 2024Navigating the student visa application process for international students can be complex, and even minor errors can lead to costly delays or outright denials. With Immigration New Zealand (INZ) tightening its scrutiny of offshore student visa applications, agents need to be more diligent than ever. In 2023, the average student visa decline rate was 20%, with some countries experiencing significantly higher rejection rates: Nepal (74%), Nigeria (58%), South Africa (44%), and India (40%).
In this article, we cover the top five mistakes student agents often make when handling applications to study in New Zealand and offer practical advice to help you avoid these pitfalls.
By addressing these common issues, you can ensure smooth, successful visa outcomes for your clients.
1. Incorrect or Insufficient Evidence of Funds
One of the most common reasons for student visa denials is submitting inadequate or unacceptable evidence of financial support. INZ, not just requires proof that international students can cover their tuition fees, living costs, and other expenses while studying in New Zealand, but must be convinced that these funds are from a ‘genuine source’ and ‘genuinely available’ to the student. Many agents submit financial documents that are outdated, from unacceptable sources, or do not meet INZ standards.
Tip: Always check the latest INZ guidelines on acceptable forms of financial evidence. These can vary from country to country. And additionally, from a specific region to another in one country.
Bank statements must show consistent transactions, and funds should be available for a significant period before the student visa application is lodged. Ensuring that these requirements are met will reduce student visa processing time and improve the chances of approval.
2. Failing to Prove Bona Fides
INZ closely examines whether applicants are genuine international students. Failing to establish the student’s bona fides —proof of their intention to study in NZ and return home after completing their education—is a significant reason for visa refusals. Generic or poorly tailored applications often struggle to convey this.
Tip: Customize each application to demonstrate why the student is genuinely interested in studying in New Zealand. This is not easy feat!
Highlight their academic background, future career plans, and how the chosen course aligns with their goals, is a starting point. Explain why New Zealand is the ideal destination for their studies, and if applicable, how they intend to utilize a post-study work visa in NZ to further their career.
3. Incomplete or Incorrect Documentation
Submitting incomplete or inaccurate documentation is a surefire way to delay student visa processing times or result in outright denial. Common issues include failing to disclose previous visa refusals, providing inconsistent information, or omitting required documents for the visa officer's assessment.
Tip: Double-check every application for completeness and accuracy. If unsure, utilise the assistance of an expert that knows the rules inside out.
Be transparent about the applicant’s history, including any prior visa refusals in other countries. Provide all necessary documents and supporting letters to strengthen the case. The more thorough the application, the better the chances of success when students apply for a student visa NZ.
But note - ‘thorough application’ does not mean overloading unnecessary documents. So strike that right balance!
4. Generic or Misleading Statements of Purpose (SOPs)
A strong, personalised Statement of Purpose (SOP) is crucial for student visa applications. Unfortunately, many agents submit generic or poorly crafted SOPs that fail to convey the student’s motivations and goals. In some cases, misleading or exaggerated statements can harm the application.
Tip: Invest time in crafting a detailed SOP for each student. The SOP in unique to each student and should clearly explain why the student wants to study in New Zealand, how the chosen course aligns with their career aspirations, and why they selected the specific institution. Avoid generic statements and focus on genuine motivations.
Remember, long SOPs is not advisable. Precise, succinct and unique are the key words here.
5. Lack of Knowledge About Visa Requirements
Even if you feel like you have met the above 4 requirements well, the requirements for student visas can change frequently, and failing to stay up-to-date can result in costly mistakes. What you ‘think’ may be acceptable, may no longer work for INZ!
Most education agents that send students to a number of countries including New Zealand, lack in-depth knowledge of our current visa regulations, leading to the submission of outdated or incorrect information.
