No Visas for Partners of ANZSCO Level 4 and 5 AEWV holders

26 June 2024

From 26 June 2024, people holding an AEWV in roles at Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) levels 4 and 5 without a pathway to residency are no longer able to support work, visitor, or student visa applications for their partners and dependent children.

Partners and dependent children will still be able to apply for a visa in their own right to come to New Zealand, such as an Accredited Employer Work Visa or an international student visa, provided they meet the requirements.

The government has made this change to align the settings with what they were under the previous Essential Skills Work Visa.

The following groups are NOT impacted by these changes:

Who is not affected by Immigration NZ changes on AEWV

Our detailed tables below break down the roles, pay rates, and types of partner visas that can be supported. This visual guide will help you understand your options and make informed decisions about your future in New Zealand.

Ability to support partner visas if you hold an Accredited Employer Work Visa

If you are on the Green List or classified as a high-income earner, your ability to support partner visas is significantly enhanced. Partners of individuals in these categories can apply for open work visas or visitor visas, offering them the flexibility to join you in New Zealand and either work or explore the country. For Truck Drivers and Bus Drivers on a residence pathway, they can still support partner visas depending on their pay rate. Only Caregivers at Level 4 can support partner visas, while Caregivers at Level 3 cannot.

For those whose roles fall under ANZSCO levels 1–5, the support options vary. Higher pay rates and specific job classifications can impact the types of visas available for your partners. Notably, roles classified under ANZSCO levels 4 and 5 face more stringent conditions, with fewer options for partner visas.
