Immigration for Medical Practices and Employers

The Immigration updates, policy changes and complexities will impact medical practices and DHBs sourcing overseas talent, just like other employers in New Zealand.

At present, New Zealand’s border is closed to all migrant travellers, but if DHBs and practices do not find the staff required within New Zealand, there is a dedicated entry pathway for some medical professionals. The ‘critical health worker’ border exemption category has speedy processing and covers a range of health & disability workers. To be eligible under this category, the employment must start by 31 December 2020. Evidence of qualifications and registrations will also be required. Family members of prospective employees can also be included in the request to travel.

Some of the roles considered to be ‘Critical Health workers’ include –

• Qualified nurses invited by Nursing Council of NZ
• Registered health practitioners as set out in the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003
• Technical and support staff directly involved in provision of health & disability services
• Workers working with medical equipment
• Paramedics and ambulance staff

Once in New Zealand, there are multiple pathways to residence for medical professionals to pursue – Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), Long Term Skill Shortage List and Talent – Accredited Employer. Each category has its own specific set of requirements and which one works the best depends on each individual case. New SMC assessments are currently suspended until early February 2021, but the other 2 residence categories are functional.

This industry is ripe with opportunity and potential for those applicants that qualify. Medical employers should also be aware of the immigration changes coming up next year, specifically mandatory employer accreditation. Once the new accreditation scheme takes effect in mid-2022, an employer will not be able to support foreign workers unless they have attained accreditation most appropriate to their circumstances.
