5 Costly Mistakes in Student Visa Applications Every Agent Should be aware of!

18 October 2022

Navigating the visa application process for international students can be complex, and even minor errors can lead to costly delays or outright denials. With Immigration New Zealand (INZ) tightening its scrutiny of offshore student visa applications, agents need to be more diligent than ever. In 2023, the overall student visa decline rate averaged 20%, with some countries seeing even higher rejection rates: Nepal (74%), Nigeria (58%), South Africa (44%) and India (40%).

In this article, we cover the top five mistakes student agents often make and offer practical tips to help you avoid these pitfalls and ensure smooth, successful applications for your clients.

1. Incorrect or Insufficient Evidence of Funds

One of the most common reasons for visa denials is failing to provide adequate or acceptable evidence of financial support. INZ requires proof that a student can cover their tuition fees, living costs, and other expenses while studying in New Zealand. However, many agents submit financial documents that are either outdated, from unacceptable sources, or don’t meet INZ standards.

Tip: Always check the latest INZ guidelines on acceptable forms of financial evidence. Bank statements must show consistent transactions and funds should be available for a significant period before the application.

2. Failing to Prove Bona Fides

INZ is vigilant about ensuring that applicants are genuine students. Failing to establish the student’s bona fides—proof of their intention to genuinely study and return home post-study—is another major reason for visa refusals. Many agents submit weak or generic applications that do not effectively demonstrate this.

Tip: Tailor each application to show why the student is genuinely interested in studying in New Zealand. Highlight their academic background, future career goals, and why New Zealand is the ideal destination for them.

3. Incomplete or Incorrect Documentation

Missing critical information or providing inaccurate details can quickly lead to visa denials. Common mistakes include not declaring previous visa declines, submitting inconsistent information, or failing to include essential documents for the visa officer to assess the application comprehensively.

Tip: Always double-check every application for completeness and accuracy. Be transparent about the applicant’s history, including any prior visa refusals in other countries. Submit all required documents and any supporting letters - The more thorough the application, the higher the chances of approval.

4. Generic or Misleading Statements of Purpose (SOPs)

A personal Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a crucial part of the visa application, but many agents submit generic or poorly written SOPs that do not reflect the individual student’s motivations and goals. In some cases, misleading or exaggerated information can also lead to a visa rejection.

Tip: Invest time in crafting a detailed, personalized SOP for each student. The SOP should clearly explain why the student wants to study in New Zealand, how the course aligns with their career aspirations, and why they chose the specific institution.

5. Lack of Knowledge About Visa Requirements

The visa requirements for New Zealand can change frequently, and failing to stay updated with these changes can result in avoidable mistakes. Some agents lack in-depth knowledge of the current visa regulations, leading to the submission of outdated or incorrect information, which may cause a refusal.

Tip: Partner with Licensed Immigration Advisors who can ensure the application is submitted for the best chance of success. Continuously educate yourself and your team on INZ’s latest student visa requirements. A small mistake due to outdated information can cost your client their visa, so staying informed is critical.
